Favorite 20th Century Novel: The Secret History
Reason for starting the book club: "Part of my job is teaching high school kids to appreciate reading literature. I thought I could do that better if discussed some really great books with women who love to read. Plus, I thought it would be fun. So I sent out an email to women who live on my block, and was so happy when several of them wanted to join."

Favorite 20th Century Novel: The Great Gatsby
Reason for joining the book club: I've been living with Hazel ever since she took me in, after my life went crazy. I was her student before she became my legal guardian, but now I think of her as a sister. I love reading books and talking about books, and when she came up with the idea for the book club, of course I was going to say yes!"

Favorite 20th Century Novel: Lord of the Flies
Reason for joining the book club: "I've lived in this neighborhood for over twenty years, and people are becoming less friendly and more into themselves. I wanted some engagement and interaction. I've always loved reading, but I'm especially interested in having real conversations with my neighbors, and- I'll admit - in drinking wine and enjoying myself!"

Favorite 20th Century Novel: To Kill a Mockingbird
Reason for joining the book club: "I'm a lawyer and I spend my days writing policy. It's an honest living, but sometimes I miss getting to talk about ideals, dreams, and abstract concepts. When I was a student, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer like Atticus Finch, but that's not how things turned out. Now, I'm just looking to be inspired.

Favorite 20th Century Novel: Brave New World
Reason for joining the book club: Ever since my husband and I bought this neighborhood diner, almost all my waking hours are devoted to running it. That is, when I'm not spending time driving my kids around to their various activities or trying to be a good mom. Joining this book club will give me an excuse to drop everything and read, plus I'll get to relax and socialize a little too. Just what I need!

Favorite 20th Century Novel: Bridget Jones' Diary
Reason for joining the book club: I had just moved into my new house in my new neighborhood, when I met Hazel, who said she's so glad there's now another single lady in her thirties living close by. We hit it off right away, and when she said I should join the book club, I was like, 'Um, hell yeah. Reading, wine, and neighborhood gossip. Count me in!' I love to read, as long it's nothing too pretentious or sanctimonious. But I have a good feeling that this book club won't be like that.
