The Perfect Fictional Town

Laurel Osterkamp · December 14, 2024

Putting together my mood board for the fictional town of Sugar Pine, Colorado. Most of it is based (stolen) from Ourey, Colorado, which has the gorgeous hot spring pools (top left photo), amazing hiking, and the quaint downtown. But I’m adding in a college campus (the photo is actually of Salt Lake City University.) As I write my two WIPs set in Sugar Pine, I also borrow from small towns I’ve visited in MN, WI, and CO, outside of Boulder. In my mind, Sugar Pine is in South Western Colorado, not far from Pueblo. My dad built a very remote mountain cabin in that area, and when I was growing up we went there every summer.
It’s so much fun to just invent this idyllic town and write about it like it’s real. In my mind, it is!
